Straight From The Coaches Mouth...

Did You Know…

The coin flip at the beginning of the game decides more than just the side of the field each team initially defends?

The team that wins the toss receives the choice of goals or control of the first alternate possession, also known as AP. The team that loses the toss receives the option not selected by the other team.

When the officials cannot determine which team should be awarded the ball, possession alternates.

Here are a few common situations where possession would be given to the next AP:

  1. The ball goes out of bounds, and it is unclear which team touched the ball last.
  2. Two players are equidistant from the ball when it goes out of bounds on a shot.
  3. Simultaneous fouls are called on both teams when neither team has possession.
  4. If you're not sure why an official awarded possession to a particular team, consider that it may have been given to the team with the AP.
